KESHKI "Earth" Reworked Kimono

$1,250.00
The KIMONO COLLECTION is a project which highlights the cultural craftsmanship behind vintage kimonos. Rather than allowing these textiles to disappear quietly, KESHKI aims to re-contextualize these garments in a contemporary aesthetic through thoughtful reinterpretation in design. BACKGROUND This is a vintage kimono that is likely an 大島紬 (oshima tsumugi) textile, which utilizes a precise 縦横絣 (tate-yoko kasuri) weaving technique where both the warp and weft threads are perfectly aligned by skilled craftsmen. The result is a characteristic crosshatched pattern that appears when examining the textile closely. The muted earth tones are also characteristic of an 大島紬 textile, where the threads are soaked in an iron-rich mud bath anywhere from 10 to upwards of 60 times to achieve the desired color prior to being woven. The 大島紬 kimono is regarded as one of the most prestigious Japanese textile as each kimono is crafted by a declining number of specialized craftsmen and takes 6 months to a year to produce. This kimono has been reworked using distressing, with the addition of metallic rhinestones, leather cords and rivets. Sourced and reworked in Tokyo. CARE Because each vintage piece is delicate, handmade and thoughtfully reworked, we recommend spot cleaning only. Please avoid machine washing or soaking, as this may damage the fabric and detailing.
